What is wellbeing?
There is no common international definition of wellbeing and yet, many countries are funding programs to try and monitor their population’s level of wellbeing.
Why?
As explained by the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on their website in “Well-Being Concepts”:
“Well-being is associated with numerous health-, job-, family-, and economically-related benefits. For example, higher levels of well-being are associated with decreased risk of disease, illness, and injury; better immune functioning; speedier recovery; and increased longevity. Individuals with high levels of well-being are more productive at work and are more likely to contribute to their communities”.
I have devoted the past 20 years to the Canadian universal public healthcare system. As an Excellence Healthcare Canada Fellow, I have worked with colleagues to design services that truly benefit and improve the wellbeing of patients and their families. Nevertheless, over the years, I have seen long waitlists, over-capacitated ER’s and an ever increasing number of people in need of care, as opposed to a decreasing availability of qualified human resources. Western medicine has shown its tremendous competence at treating illnesses and injuries, but when these excellent services are not accessible, when you or your loved ones are waitlisted for months or years, then what are you left with?
Could more be done before the onset of disease?
What if we invested in creating wellbeing?
What if people were taught a list of dos, instead of a list of don’ts?
But how?
How do you increase your level of wellbeing?
To answer that question, we need to know what to work on…
In their “Health Promotion Glossary of Terms 2021”, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that :
” Well-being encompasses quality of life and the ability of people and societies to contribute to the world with a sense of meaning and purpose“.
Australia’s State of Victoria’s Department of Health goes even further on their website in “Better Health”:
“Wellbeing is not just the absence of disease or illness. It’s a complex combination of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and social health factors. Wellbeing is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction. In short, wellbeing could be described as how you feel about yourself and your life”.

Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?"- Socrates
